For long-term personal storage, is H.265 worth the smaller size, or is H.264 safer because more devices can decode it?

For a true archive, preserve the camera originals first. A delivery MP4 is not a substitute for originals, project files and important assets.

Between convenient viewing copies, H.264 wins compatibility and HEVC wins storage efficiency. For future editing, an acquisition/intermediate strategy matters more than either delivery codec.
