I am comparing Windows editors and want to avoid a conversion step for normal camera/phone H.264 MP4. Can VSDC work with them directly, and when would proxies still make sense?

For supported H.264 MP4, direct editing is the normal path. Conversion is not a mandatory first step just because the container is MP4.

Proxies still make sense when resolution/frame rate/effects make the timeline heavy, or when long-GOP decode is the bottleneck. Proxying is about responsiveness, not only compatibility.
