What does 'Variable Frame Rate Detected' actually mean for an MP4 edit?

My editor flags a phone MP4 as Variable Frame Rate. The clip still plays. Should I convert it immediately, or only if I see a real timing problem?

VFR is not automatically broken. Many phones and screen recorders use it intentionally. The real question is whether the editor handles this specific file predictably.

Watch for symptoms: gradual audio drift, repeated/skipped frames, proxy mismatch, multicam alignment errors or output duration changes. If none appear, conversion may be unnecessary.
