The files are not corrupt, but one computer struggles badly while another plays them smoothly.
Before transcoding everything, what hardware/software checks should I make?

Check whether the machine has hardware decode support for the exact codec/profile/bit depth and whether the editor is actually using it.

If decoding is the bottleneck, proxies can be a better answer than permanently converting all camera originals.
