Should I remux an MKV recording to MP4 or re-encode it before editing?

I have an H.264 recording in MKV and an editor that prefers MP4. If the codec is already supported, is remuxing enough, or should I encode a fresh H.264 MP4?

Remux first. Remuxing changes the container while copying the existing compressed streams, so it is fast and avoids another lossy generation.
