When I use the camera for short trail clips I normally start recording immediately. A few clips later have little or no usable location data.

For rides where telemetry matters, is it better to power the camera on first and wait for a GPS lock before pressing record?

That is the safer habit when telemetry matters. I would give the camera time in an open area before starting the important section, then check a short test clip before the full ride.

We are adding this to the pre-recording checklist: confirm location lock before the important take, avoid obstructing the camera's view of the sky, and keep an original file for metadata testing before any conversion.
