My laptop is not a workstation. 4K files play, but scrubbing becomes slow once I add effects.
Before buying new hardware, what workflow changes are worth trying?

Proxy files made a much bigger difference for me than changing preview quality alone. I keep the camera originals for export and edit against lighter media.

Proxies, lower preview resolution, hardware decoding where available, and avoiding unnecessary intermediate conversions are the first things we would test. We will include lower-end hardware in our editor benchmarks because action-camera users often edit on travel laptops.
