For travel footage I want two modes: a fast automatic result for most clips and manual control for the few difficult shots.
Can VSDC be used that way without forcing every HDR clip into the same manual correction workflow?

Yes. VSDC's HDR workflow includes automatic handling/tone mapping alongside manual color tools. We will compare a quick managed result against a manual correction on the same source.

That is the comparison I want to see. Automatic is valuable when it is predictable, even if manual grading can ultimately do more.
