Per-clip intermediates are less elegant, but at least a trim does not throw the whole route out of sync.

That would solve one of my biggest annoyances with phone-recorded GPX tracks. A consistent sync step matters more than fancy gauges.

For cycling I also use a deliberate sharp turn near the start. It is easier to identify on a map than a constant-speed straight section.
